Misc: Mid July Works

Since my buddy is joining a painting challenge, I decided to accelerate my work on a few models to free up the time for me to paint alongside him.

Eldrad Ulthran

I was working on this model partly before my iPad screen broke. Once fixed, my painting speed went on hold until recently when it broke again.

Anyway, got this done with whatever pots of paint, rather than buying the new sigmar paints that Duncan used in his tutorial. Only thing left is the glyphs on the cloak.

Robotech Tactics Spartan
Since my Hi-Metal R model arrived I decided to finished up these two units to at least have a set of destroids available on my table. The model is basecoated with Caliban Green, followed by Kabalite Green and the washed with Nuln Oil, then drubrushed with Kabalite Green. Probably should have gotten Sybarite Green which looks much more closer to the model's colour. At least it is now complete.

Robotech Tactis Regult
Another model which I decided to run a test scheme to differ from the first painted set. This time using Kantor Blue and Ulthuan Grey. Darker greys were Dawnstone and the darkest colour are Stegadon Scale Green.

Side by side comparison between the old and new

Deathwing
Also, I have decided to work on a different technique for my Deathwing units. Instead of the entire basecoated with Zandri Dust/Ushabti Bone like I used to, this one is basecoated with Zandri Dust, followed by a wash in Agrax Earthshade. The Ushabti is then applied only on the main surfaces while most other areas are left to create a distinct visual depth on the models. If this works, I'll probably adopt this as my new method to paint the Deathwings.

Warhammer 40K: WE BRING DEATH!!!

Finally got the pieces done. Well technically 2 more to go since I missed out one genestealer and have the CAT unit remaining to paint.

L to R: Bro Omnio, Brother Zael, Brother Goriel
Brother Denio, Sergeant Lorenzo, Brother Claudio
Dead Termie Marker

Another project completed. Had a little disaster working with Brother Zael and Brother Omnio earlier where the varnishing left chalk like residue all over the model once the model dried. This probably caused from too much water added. Had to wash the entire model again with Nuln Oil before applying entire layer of highlight again over the model. Almost as if I used the paint and dunk method. Well, at least they turned out better.

For Brother Goriel, I decided to just go a little wild by adding Nurgle's Rot and Blood for the Blood God to the model since Goriel is the only model with serious battle damage on him.

Time to wrap up the Descent models.

Warhammer 40K: Space Hulk Returns!

This, by far, is the most delayed 40K project in my list of ongoing works. Beginning with acquiring the 4th release of Space Hulk board game in 2014, followed by the last work done in 2016, I'm glad that they are finally back on the desk.

Since having a permanent paint station to accelerate my paint jobs, I decided to take a short break from Descent 2 for a while. Actually, I have no idea how to paint the rest of my big monsters and decided to work on something else for a while. With that situation, the Space Hulk termies went to of the list (that or my replacement Dark Vengeance DA minis. Robotech is taking a longer hiatus)

L to R: Brother Noctis, Lexicanium Calistarius (or Mephiston). Brother Scipio
Brother Leon, Brother Valencio, Sergeant Gideon
Now looking at them, I think I will replace the base from Steel Legion Drab, which is my go to base colour, to their team colour for Death Angels. That should make things a little more interesting. One thing for sure is that I am 50% done with the termies!

Also, I actually did the Ettins for Descent 2 before I decided to put them on hold.

Here's to looking forward to completing 6 more termies and 1 genestealer (which I missed out XD)

And who knows, maybe the Lord of the Fallen might just make an appearance XD

Warhamer 40K - Stripping Death Angels

Over the Chinese New Year, I decided to reassign my existing Death Angel units to my first company since I already have the actual Space Hulk models for play. The stripping work was done using plenty of left over Dettol from the last job.

Models before the stripping
After Stripping
Stripping Finecast
The models were left in Dettol for 4 hours while I did some repainting in my living room. No overnight soaking this time as I had the whole house to myself during my pre Chinese New Year leave. Plus, the missus was sensitive about the Dettol odor the last time I soaked for 2 days. Gave the models a simple scrub with my old toothbrush and have gloves on this time. Most of the paint came off after a the soak and scrub except for the librarian which was a finecast.

Lesson learned: no finecast stripping.

Once dried, I primed them with my Bossny Blackboard black (one last can remaining)
Some reds can still be seen under right lighting (as shown below) to which should be fixed with the Zandri Dust basecoat.
Quick Priming

Librarian after repriming

Most of the basecoat layers were completed during the Holidays in Penang when things are quiet. Hopefully, they should be completed within the next two months and ready to be assigned as part of Deathwing Company.
After basecoats. Bone armour washed and drybrushed with Ushabti Bone

I also took the chance to finally do some work on the Space Hulk Minis. Like the Deathwings above, I basecoat, wash and drybrushed the main body (reds in this case) and gave ta basecoat layer on the rest as seen below (basically the cloth, seals, chains, metals  and weapons)

Genestealers were also not forgotten. Four of them were my test subject on the paint scheme as seen in White Dwarf issue 33 which showcased Space Hulk. The carapace were the focus in this work.

Looking forward to clear up these models by May.

Warhammer 40K: 5th Company Dreadnought Complete

Completed the Dreadnoughts over last night. They could have been completed much earlier if I can get time aside on the dining table to work on them. It is hard to be able to paint these days unless I am pulling an overnighter like last night. (10 pm to 3 am)

I added some iconography from whatever I have in my bit boxes to spice the models up instead of leaving them blank. Got the idea to paint the chapter and company logo on the legs from the web while looking out for ideas to make mortis dreadnoughts.

I have also started working on some space hulk models here and there which gave me an idea of adding photos to my paint method page. The first I will be working on will be the librarian and a standard terminator with storm bolter. I will be adding further to the articles as I worked on them.

The Space Hulk models so far.

I will be focusing on the two models above for the moment to add more contents for my Paint Method page.

This model was tough to basecoat with the extra cloths flowing around. On the plus side, less to work underneath it.

I decided to add this in my initial list since it would be fun to paint a dead termie too. I did not have this guy in my earlier Death Angel project.

Warhammer 40K: Deathwing Terminators Squad 5

Finally got the units completed over more than a weekend.

This is probably the last time I will be assembling the units fully before painting them. I will probably not use super glue to join plastic parts since I was able to break the cape cleanly off from the sergeant, ripping off only the paint at the cape. Plastic glue is the way to go!!!

Also here is the completed modified Deathwing Champion which I was working on with the units above.

In lieu of my attempts to construct the Deathwing Redemption Force from Apocalypse, I am currently looking at using the following composition as the base for my company.

I might just grab some interesting combination which I can see here for a 750 game (Terminator with Cyclone Missiles, Thunderhammer and Storm Shields XD)

*Update: Whoo hoo!!!! Just confirmed based on Games Workshop's product catalogue that the squad does not need to be full strength 10 men each! Apocalypse Deathwing Redemption Force can be seen here. Looks like time to readjust everything again!

Warhammer 40K: Belail and Deathwing Knights

I placed an order for Belial over in December when I decided to get myself Deathwing Company (Yes, all 100 units, 20 5 man squad each!)

So when Belial arrived last week at the shop, I was grinning like the Cheshire cat  since he was the missing piece in my 750 point army.

I was already making 3 Deathwing Knights from my left over terminator pieces, which I decided to make since they are part of the company (4 squad at least for Apocalypse campaign) although I was not really a fan of using them. These knights became my test subject for Belial.
There was a small pit in his left finger which I missed until I started painting. The only defect in this model.

Right away after assembling, I got to work on priming it for later painting.

One thing good about the primer is that you get a good look on how the light falls on the miniature, which gives a good idea on where to highlight. Unfortunately, these are usually noticed after I post them on my blog. Next time then!

Weekends are usually a good time to work on key projects, especially when there is a long weekend due to the holidays. I spread my time between working with Belial and the knights. Belial eventually took precedence over the knights despite me using them as test  subjects earlier.

Finally, I got myself fresh new batteries since it died over the weekend. And here I present to you, Belial and 3 Deathwing Knights.

I will be adding text to the icons at a much later time. Probably some extra wash on the knight's mace and cables.

Next Step:
- Get them on the Battlefield XD
