Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Deathwing Squad 2 Part 2

Christmas was a time of celebration and a time of rest.

I took my usual year end annual leave (Christmas to New Year) as usual this year to rest and relax. And when I said rest and relax, I meant working on my minis. While there is some stress when you are working on something, it is surprising quite therapeutic working on the minis. Perhaps, this is why it is a hobby (and if my dad is reading this, no, I do not intend to make any money out of it unless. Not at this time at least)

Also had a few experimentation on some parts especially the feathers and the sergeant's power sword in this project.

I actually had some trouble working on the minis as I forgot to take detailed steps on how the minis were painted the last time. This shows the importance of taking notes, so here goes:

Main Armour

- Basecoat with Ushbati Bone (2 light layers)
- Wash with Seraphim Sepia
- Drybrush with Ushbati Bone

Insignia
- Bascoat with thin layers of Caliban Green
- Wash with Beil-Tan Green
- Drybrush Warpstone Glow
- Drybrush Moot Green
- Glaze Waywatcher Green

Ropes
- Basecoat White Scar
-Wash Carroburg Crimson

Glow on the power sword this time (since green was chosen) was done by basecoating with Leadbelcher followed by several layers of drybrush from black to various green-black colour mix (using Abbadon Black, Caliban Green, Kabalite Green, Warpstone Glow, Moot Green, White Scar) until the last layer being Moot Green + White Scar wash. Still a long way to go for me to create power weapons proper.

Feathers this time were done by mostly drybrushing instead of layering.

I also got myself a new box of Deathwing Command Squad box to work on some additional units for my future 750 point army. These will also double up as spare units should I chose to swap them in my army. In the long run, I would love to be able to assemble the whole Deathwing Company (100 Deathwing Termies XD). We will see how the year goes.

Some parts of this unit was made via swapping with leftovers I had from the earlier Death Angels Termies.

And a peek on what is to be seen (very) soon.
It's red.

So with this, I wish all of you who are reading a Merry (belated) Christmas and a Happy New 2014!

Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Deathwing Squad 2 Part 1

Finally got the pieces I ebay-ed yesterday. I am not exactly a fan of kit-bashing nor have had any experience with it before. Hence the challenge of making the next unit less identical to the Dark Vengeance Deathwing Squad I had earlier.

Sergeant

Assault Gunner

Chain-fist Guy

Generic 1

Generic 2

As you can see, the most I did was readjusting the right arms of the units as they were a separate piece from the rest of the model unlike the left arm, which was moulded to either the front or the rear part of the body. I also had a plan to readjust the Chain-fist Guy's chainfist arm to the rear, where I will be needing to borrow someone's saw. Perhaps another time.

Also to note was a part swap between Chain-fist Guy's bolter with Generic 1's, which would explain the slight awkward angling of the arm. Generic 2 was added a shoulder insignia from one of my left over bits from the Terminator Assault squad.

These units were then patched up using Citadel's Liquid Green Stuff. I have the green stuff putty at hand, which I decided not to use them at the moment (still fresh and unopened from the packaging).

Hopefully, I will get to prime them and start painting over the next week for my 750 point army.

Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Part 10

Finally, Dark Vengeance set is completed!!!

I really did not have any ideas on how to exactly paint them even with online references which I just found (http://www.3plusplus.net/2012/08/6th-edition-starter-set-dark-vengeance-preorders/)

The urgency to complete them before the end of the month got me to try something different and a little short cut-tish since I found myself getting a little lazy to put any more effort (eg, paint mixing to get the tones needed)

I used plenty of drybrushing this time to create a dusty effect on the cultist, except for Tetchvar who was painted  a few days earlier. I initially tried to create an identity for each of the twins, via grey (dawnstone) and brown (steel legion drab) drybrushing. The grey did not turn out so well against some of the colours I used as a basecoat.

The complete set is now in my living room cupboard. I am thinking of creating a small diorama to showcase the units.
Dark Angels
Crimson Slaughter

For those who are wondering, yes, the bases are still unpainted as I have yet to decide the exact colour to use (either Eschin Grey, Dawnstone or the same gold/brown like colour I see around. Still have not identified that shade of colour)

Next Step:
- Base colouring
- Deathwing Army setup

*On a footnote, this is entry number 50! Woo Hoo!!!

Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Part 9

Completed 1 set of Chaos Cultist Sect Anarkus over the weekend. 1 more set to go.

Iron Painter was held at Hobby Forge by Legio Malaysia over the weekend. One of the advice give was to know what colour scheme to paint prior to the event. Chaos cultist will definitely not make it into my list as I have no idea what colour to be using when painting these guys. Even attempting to use the Chaos Marines Codex as a reference did not help much. Anyway, enjoy.

Next step:
- Chaos Cultist Sect Tetchvar

Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Part 8

Chaos Chosens completed over the weekend.

This unit was the first to be completed as I painted this while following Jay's tutorial. I then use it as a guide on parts to paint on the other models.

The hellbrute is the first "vehicle" I have painted.it is certainly fun to paint it in preparation of the dreadnoughts I intend to add to my Deathwing company.

Kranon posed an interesting challenge as I tried to create a "living effect" after noticing the faces on the blade. This, in my opinion, is the toughest part in the whole collection to create. I am still undecided on the quality presented here. I might just look around eBay for another model to paint.
Yeah, I forgot to finish up the plasma gun.

The Sergeant.

The close combat guy.

The power axe guy.

The twins.

Chaos units here are certainly a fun bunch to paint due to the layer of details and the chaotic designs on their armour, especially the sculpture of faces trying to come out from their leg and shoulder plates.

I will probably revisit on some of the minor parts which I left out this round such as the tendrils encasing the backpacks.

Next step:-
- Chaos cultist

Warhammer 40K: Dark Vengeance Part 7

Started Chaos Chosens while I was working together with the Ravenwings especially on the initial basecoats.

The methods chosen to paint them were based on Jay of MiniWargaming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtLGWcfHIc0).

These units only had their basecoat of Mephiston Red

Basically, the steps were:
1. Basecoat with Mephiston Red
2. Wash with Carroburg Crimson
3. Layer with Evil Sunz Scarlet
4. Layer with Wild Rider Red
5. Glaze with Bloodleter

I did a light brushing instead as seen below

Next Step:
- Chaos Chosen Details
