Warhammer 40K: Dark Talon, Tactical Marines, Company Veterans Complete

Just spent the day getting overdue models done, primarily the Dark Talon.

Dark Talon

This took me quite a while to decide how to paint some of the key part especially the white of the wings as unit on the box had a blue tinge towards the tips. Tried to emulate that with Guilliman Blue without success. At least now we have one more major unit out of the to do list. I will be adding some close ups later. Enjoy the closeups below.

Tactical Marines
Have not quite decided which squad in the 5th Company they will join. Not even sure if they will be devastator or tactical squad. Perhaps at a later time, the accompanying insignia will be painted.

Company Veterans

Part of this company will be joining the Command Squad (since the Company Champion is completed). The rest will be assigned to various squad in the 5th Company. Despite having done my roster, I will be assigning them all to specific squads at a later time.

As a preview on the 5th Company roster (1915pt),
- 1st Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Heavy Bolter) (175pt)
- 2nd Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Multi-Melta) (175pt)
- 3rd Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Missile Launcher) (180pt)
- 4th Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Missle Launcher with Flakk Missile) (190pt)
- 5th Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Plasma Cannon) (Dark Vengeance) (180pt)
- 6th Tactical Squad (1 Plasmagun, 1 Lascannon) (185pt)
- 1st Assault Squad (2 Flamer) (190pt)
- 2nd Assaunt Squad (2 Plasma Pistol) (210pt)
- 1st Devastator Squad (1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Missle Launcher, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 Lascannon) (210pt)
- 2nd Devastator Squad (1 Multi-Melta, 1 Missle Launcher with Flakk Missile, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 Lascannon) (220pt)

I have yet to decide the exact gear for each of the squad's sergeants. All of them will be veterans for 10 points each.

Warhammer 40K: Dark Talon and AOBR Dreadnought. The work so far

Just a little post on what I have done so far on the Dark Talon and the Dreadnought from AOBR since I have had some progress on this in the last several months..

Dark Talon

Painted interior
The unit was primed and basecoated with a mix of 2 part Abbadon Black to 1 part Eshin Grey. The grey icons are basecoated with Eshin Grey while the Ravenwing symbols were painted painted white. The interiors were done prior to gluing all of them together.

The next step will definitely to drybrush the entire model with Dawnstone especially on the edges.

AOBR Dreadnought

Got this model from ebay as part of the AOBR marine's collection which I got along with a buddy of mine. I took the Dreadnought and he had the rest. I wanted this guy mainly for the multi melta to swap around with my existing Venerable Dreadnought, which only then I realised that they do not even fit. Looks like forgeworld for me then. Also, while I have no confirmation that Deathwings are only having Venerables, I decided to assign it to Deathwing anyway.  I had it done to this point 3 months plus ago. Only a few minor touch up need to be done especially on the purity seals and the banner.

This unit was previously primed blue for the Ultramarines previously. Since the layer was thin, I decided to just go ahead and basecoat Ushbati Bone over it and proceed from there. The work done on this units is probably better detailed if compared over to the Venerable Dreadnought. I may just revisit and improve it at a later date.

Warhammer 40K: Land Raider + Dark Talon Part 1

A new month has started and I was getting a little itchy since I did not do much painting job over the month of April. Since I had completed about 30+ Deathwing Terminators for my Deathwing Company, I decided to celebrate by getting myself a Land Raider for my company (since they are the only vehicles allowed as Deathwing Vehicles).

Calculating my points, I found that I would have an enough total to redeem for another unit of sorts. Since the Swarmlord/Hive Tyrant was sold out, I went ahead and got myself a Dark Talon/Nephilim box set to add to my army. I was also hoping to get a Crusader/Redeemer box set which was also out of stock, hence the generic Land Raider.

Assembling the Land Raider was certainly a challenge as there were quite a lot of details inside which made me want to paint although it will most likely not visible unless one decided to take a very close look into the interior.

Among the many key points/tools I picked up a long time ago from various sources (web and books) on building vehicles, the most useful was the use of rubber bands. You will probably see plenty of these in the shots as a good amount of time, they were not glued together. Also, painting with thin layer of paints does help a lot in getting a proper consistency to prevent cloud streaks on the paint job.

The initial assembly

I decided to add the Hunter-Killer missile launcher and a storm bolter with a closed hatch on this model. I might just e-bay additional top hatch for this.

After gluing the pieces together for the first time. One of the sides was already glued earlier as the opposite side has a gear system for the front hatch

Land Raider after everything the rest of the main body and track is glued. Weapons and side doors are left unglued. I am planning to magnetise the Lascannon and the side door panels to the model later. In case you were wondering, the Lascannon and side doors were painted earlier to be used as a guide on for the rest of the hull to match.

A peek into the rear panel
A closer shot. Looks like I should have at least washed the panel.
Hopefully this model would be complete with the next round of painting.

Dark Talon
I decided to go ahead with building a Dark Talon instead of a Nephilim fighter since the Dark Talon has no optional equipment swap and it looks more majestic with the iconography on the hull. In other words, a badass.

After initial assembly. The two halves were not glued together since I did not glue the cockpit unit completely. Plenty of stuff to pain inside before it is ready.

After initial basecoating.
The model was basecoated with several layers of  1:2 mix of Dawnstone:Abbadon Black. The last layer was about 1:1 mix. I just did the basecoating since I was working primarily on the Land Raider today. One rule I learned about painting black is that never use pure black, even if the primer for the model was black. A little shading will bring out the details of the model. Of course with a little edging.

Hopefully the Land Raider will be completed soon.
