Warhammer 40K: WE BRING DEATH!!!

Finally got the pieces done. Well technically 2 more to go since I missed out one genestealer and have the CAT unit remaining to paint.

L to R: Bro Omnio, Brother Zael, Brother Goriel
Brother Denio, Sergeant Lorenzo, Brother Claudio
Dead Termie Marker
The whole team
Closer look of Brother Goriel
Brother Zael shoulder close up
Another project completed. Had a little disaster working with Brother Zael and Brother Omnio earlier where the varnishing left chalk like residue all over the model once the model dried. This probably caused from too much water added. Had to wash the entire model again with Nuln Oil before applying entire layer of highlight again over the model. Almost as if I used the paint and dunk method. Well, at least they turned out better.

For Brother Goriel, I decided to just go a little wild by adding Nurgle's Rot and Blood for the Blood God to the model since Goriel is the only model with serious battle damage on him.

Time to wrap up the Descent models.

Warhammer 40K: Space Hulk Returns!

This, by far, is the most delayed 40K project in my list of ongoing works. Beginning with acquiring the 4th release of Space Hulk board game in 2014, followed by the last work done in 2016, I'm glad that they are finally back on the desk.

Since having a permanent paint station to accelerate my paint jobs, I decided to take a short break from Descent 2 for a while. Actually, I have no idea how to paint the rest of my big monsters and decided to work on something else for a while. With that situation, the Space Hulk termies went to of the list (that or my replacement Dark Vengeance DA minis. Robotech is taking a longer hiatus)

L to R: Brother Noctis, Lexicanium Calistarius (or Mephiston). Brother Scipio
Brother Leon, Brother Valencio, Sergeant Gideon
Now looking at them, I think I will replace the base from Steel Legion Drab, which is my go to base colour, to their team colour for Death Angels. That should make things a little more interesting. One thing for sure is that I am 50% done with the termies!

Also, I actually did the Ettins for Descent 2 before I decided to put them on hold.

Here's to looking forward to completing 6 more termies and 1 genestealer (which I missed out XD)

And who knows, maybe the Lord of the Fallen might just make an appearance XD

Descent 2: Heroes, lesser monsters and then some

Finally finished the last of the smaller mobs of Descent 2 minis since the last posting

With the reference card as design reference, these were not that difficult to work on. Ashiran (Staff wielder) was the toughest of the bunch since there was not much details on her attire base on her reference card. I basically decide to wing it with various shades of green that I have on her attire instead. Due to the size of the minis, the eyes were also a pain to work on. I actually got a table magnifying glass to use, without much success

Flesh Moulders
Couldn't decide the colour scheme to use for the flesh moulders. Winged it using the different washes on the cloth to create the difference in the attire between the master unit and the rest.

Zombies
Zombie lead was washed in Carroburg Crimson to create a reddish master on the model as seen with the flesh moulders

Goblin Archers
Again, reddish master done as per before.

Since Descent 2 comes with lots of stuff and packing was a pain using bags and all, I came across using foamcore to make the inserts for the game itself which helps with the packing up by a lot!

Credits to the Esoteric Order of Gamers for the guide on building the inserts. I had mine slightly modified to fit the use of sleeved cards. Not a great modification, but it works for now as seen above.

You can get the blueprint from the Esoteric Order of Gamers website. Just a quick note, the foamcore used here are 5mm core. Made the base insert initially with 10mm and decided to redo the entire thing with 5mm.

Also completed since the last post were the following units for my chapter.

Zameon Gydreal
Deathwatch Dark Angel Zameon Gydreal was expected to be a company champion upon his return to the Dark Angel Chapter upon finishing his term with the Deathwatch. I decided to use his model in my chapter as a company champion itself. I have yet to decided which company he will be joining. Probably the 3rd company.
Ravenwing Squad 2 bikers
2 set of bikes to at lest complete the basic squad. 3 more bikes, 1 attack bike and a land raider to go for a full squad.

Descent 2: Barghest and Cave Spiders

Since my LARP is currently on hiatus, we have thoughts of having a monthly/bi-monthly meet up to probably plan something up. Next gathering plan is tentatively in March in which me and another decided that we should probably meet and have a game of Descent which I got a few years back from my BGG Secred Santa. Since the game has minis which I left hanging for some time, I decided it's time go get them started.

Barghest and Cave Spiders

Starting with the mobs, I had a barghest and a spider as a sampler when I started to work on them a few years ago. Got them done yesterday with a very simple scheme of coating with Mournfang Brown and drybryshing with Ulthuan Grey. Blood effects on the barghest was done using Blood for the Blood God which I liked the effect that the paint offers.

Warhammer 40K+Misc: 5th Company, Tau Commander Arra'Kon and Zong Shi

5th Company
Just a little pictorial post to record the work done so far until now. More units now join the rank of the 5th Company. The devastator squad and scout models are basically the only infantry models I have yet to acquire.

Company Veterans
The company veterans are completed except for the single company champion. Since the Veteran Squad is a loose group drawn from the existing companies with no dedicated company assignment for them, I will be integrating them within the various companies itself. Also to note, the existing model for the 9th Company Master is included above as I found another model instead. You can say he is demoted. He will be joining a dedicated command squad instead.

Tactical Squad. All bolters. Not a legal squad

Assault Squad at 50 percent
At this point, I realised that I am not exactly consistent in the colour used for the various iconography. I will be adding a page later to keep this in check since it can be a little tiresome to search for the very specific steps.

Commander Arra'Kon

Model is done. Left the bast to be done. Will be keeping the base colour red in consistent with the existing Mars like desert scheme as done in the previous 2 models. I may just add some grass in as to show it is not all lifeless.

Zong Shi

From a boardgame I got some time ago via Kickstarter with a friend, I decided to give the models a little life with some colour. The above is the Jade Buddha token used as a start player marker in the game itself. the model is very well detailed, although a little sticky to hold for some reason. Inside the box for too long perhaps. Since the model above is suppose to be jade, I used various colours of green and mostly dry brushing.
  1. Basecoat with Caliban Green
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil (I previously washed with Beil-Tan Green. It was not dark enough to my liking)
  3. Drybrush with Caliban Green
  4. Drybrush with Kabalite Green
  5. Drybrush with Warpstone Glow
  6. Drybrush with Moot Green
  7. Glaze with Waywatcher Green
  8. Apply Hardcoat to give it a shine
The drybrushing should be lighter then the previous layers.

The masters and the apprentices above are painted accordingly to their colour. Although the colours are not exactly the same as the original token, they should be approximate enough to match their corresponding player tokens.

Doom Miniatures Part 12: Cyberdemon

Doom 3 Cyberdemon
Even though that the board game is based on Doom 3's version, I was inspired to use the version below.

Doom 2 Cyberdemon
I realised that my models are too uniform in color and I decided to do something different with this guy.

Split apart for an easy time painting
So starting of, I based my units with Mournfang Brown. In case you are wondering, the legs and metal parts were previously painted with Leadbelcher. Probably not a wise move, but useful if you want to clearly differenciate the areas of flesh and metal.
The skin is the washed with Nuln Oil to darken the pits and creases. The skin is then layered with Steel Legion Drab and highlights were done with Ratskin Flesh. The eyes were dotted with Mephiston Red and then the entire metallic parts were glazed according to their faction. Once the paint job is completed, both top and bottom are finally glued together.
It's about damn time!

While not as bright as I wanted, it is not as dark as the miniatures when put next to each other.

Paint Used:
- Mournfang Brown
- Leadbelcher
- Steel Legion Drab
- Ratskin Flesh
- Mephiston Red
- Nuln Oil

Next Step:
- Lacquering

Doom Miniatures Part 11: Mancubus

Big, Fat, Ugly and Deadly!
It took me a long while to decide the scheme to work on this unit. I previously layer the the arms with Leadbelcher.
I start of by layering a base Ratskin Flesh.
The miniature is then layered with Steel Legion Drab to give it a darker hue.
A layer of Rakath Flesh is then added to give it a grey hue.

Finally, I added Mournfang Brown to give it a nice light brown base color.
Here I tested by washing with Light Seraphim Sepia which does not make very much different over brown base. I wash it again with Agarax Earthshade to give it a more detailed shadow on the pits and groves.
I then drybrush Ushbati Bone all over the model to give a greyer hue.
Finally, the mouthpiece is drybrushed with Pink Horror. The arm and back is recolored with Leadbelcher. The toes are colored with Ceramite White.

Only after painting, do I realised that I should have gone retro!
Probably the better color to use.

I might rework on of my units to this color. At least I know now how my cyberdemon is going to use.

Paint Used:
- Leadbelcher
- Base Ratskin Flesh
- Steel Legion Drab
- Rakath Flesh
- Light Seraphim Sepia
- Agarax Earthshade
- Drybrush Ushbati Bone
- Pink Horror
- Ceramite White

Next Step:
- Cyberdemon

Doom Miniatures Part 10: Pinky Demon

Here doggy doggy doggy!
Deciding the color to use on Pinky was tough. I finally decided with the following method with 2 test possibilities.

Test 1:
Layer with Steel Legion Grab followed by drybrushing with Rakarth Flesh.

Test 2:
Layer with Rakarth Flesh followed by drybruahing with Steel Legion Grab.

Little difference in the shading, so both were washed with Agrax Earthshade.
Several test were done to add pink to the model. Finally, I have decided on drybrushing with a layer of Pink Horroro the body. The model is washed again with Agrax Earthshade to tone down the pink.
The teeth is washed with Carroburgh Crimson and a layer of Bloodletter was applied once the wash is dried.
The forelegs of the model is layerd with Mournfang Brown with Ulthuan Grey for the claw. The inner mouth is layered with Mephiston Red.
Forgot to add that the rear legs were layered with Leadbelcher and applied with either Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade.

Paint Used:
- Rakath Flesh
- Steel Legion Grab
- Mournfang Brown
- Mephiston Red
- Ulthuan Grey
- Leadbelcher
- Agrax Earthshade
- Nuln Oil
- Carroburg Crimson
- Bloodletter

Next Step:
- Mancubus, Cyberdemon
